Achet: Healer, honest, man of the earth. P’aco.

Alice

A Supreme Guardian in Michael’s office, blending cosmic authority with sass and Southern-fried fury. She torments Ikart with flirtation, mockery, and occasional help.

A06 Exchanges sharp banter with Ikart as he files the missing angel report. Despite her antics, she provides critical information on Panea and teases a deeper affection.

A13 Alice is referenced in an earlier investigation by Ikart about the missing angel Panea, offering indirect insight about Henry’s connection.

Abigail Bhutswami (Dr.)

A brilliant but ruthless scientist and war strategist, Bhutswami defies the gods with her use of biobots powered by Essence. Obsessed with control and efficiency, she views compassion as weakness.

A01 Stands atop the ruins of a Peruvian village she’s helped destroy. Her machines sweep the land with cold precision, but she remains frustrated by resistance and inefficiency.

A04 Revealed as Sodo’s master, indicating her reach extends deep into the Spirit Realm. Her alliance with fallen angels signals her ambition to rival the gods themselves.

A08 Panea warns Henry that Bhutswami is hunting him. She becomes a looming threat—more than mortal, almost mythic.

A13 Referenced by Jonny Lee as the lead engineer of biobot technologies stemming from the Telis Institute of Technology.

A16 Her name resurfaces during Sandra’s moment of realization, signaling a deeper conspiracy and awakening old trauma.

Chauvin (and Chauvinized Objects) – Background and Meaning

Chauvin appears as both a technological and mystical reference. It is connected to:

Chavín-powered cores used in biobot weapons, likely referencing ancient mystical technology.

Chauvinized objects, which carry a dual nature—either cursed or blessed.

These objects seem to contain or unlock immense power, often involving Essence, the fundamental energy of creation in the story’s mythos.

In A08, Melvin explains that Henry’s connection to these chauvinized items reflects his spiritual growth and latent potential.

A01 Chavín-powered cores are described as the brutal energy source behind Dr. Bhutswami’s biobots. They glow like “imprisoned stars” and power machines of destruction during attacks in Peru.

A03 Panea tricks her imp captors with a chauvinized figurine, described as a small, beaver-shaped object. When its head is tapped three times, it unleashes supernatural effects, helping her escape. This item demonstrates the volatile and mystical power of chauvinized objects.

A04 The Watcher (Sodo) is described as having fallen from grace due to his development and use of Fullmetal Alchemy, powered by Chauvin gold and soul transmutation. This associates Chauvin with forbidden knowledge and alchemical corruption. In return for his development of Chauvin Gold and use of Full-Metal Alchemy to develop a transmutated Clone, Jehovah spared Sodo (The Last Watcher) from the  judgement imposed on all the Watcher Angels.

A08 Henry receives a symbolic message from a mystical tree, which transforms into a flower marked “11” after he consumes the “bitter” half of a fruit. This flower is linked to chauvinized energy and marks him with the rare title of Zhulong.

Melvin explains the concept of chauvinized objects, hinting they play a central role in Henry’s path and powers.

The Chauvin references in Shattered Mirrors and related stories blend ancient mysticism and advanced tech:

  • They power both the biobot armies and symbolic/spiritual artifacts.
  • Chauvinized items appear to choose or test their wielder, often aligning with destiny, suffering, and transformation.
  • Characters like Henry, Panea, and Sodo are all entangled in the hidden forces Chauvin tech or energy represents.

Essence

Qualities: A primordial force older than the gods, created by ‘need’ or a void; often to achieve balance.  Essence does not command—it whispers to those who hear it, guiding through intuition and spiritual resonance. It chooses vessels with purpose, though often inexplicably. Those chosen by Essence and accept it unconditionally experience transformation, pressure, and divine responsibility. Tied to the Tree of Knowledge.

A08 Panea tells Henry that Essence fills his inner void and links him to his higher purpose. His transformation begins here.

X1-MX: Lakita senses that Essence has chosen Aisha. It does not command or demand, but it “fills voids left by chaos,” shaping destinies without overt control.

X2-MX: Lakita challenges Aisha’s worthiness: “Why would the Essence waste its time on you?” Yet she concedes she doesn’t fully understand why Essence chooses anyone.

X4-MX: Lakita tells Harjit that Essence understands his pain and seeks balance, not vengeance. She reaffirms Essence’s mysterious choice of Aisha as pivotal.

X5-MX: In observing Grace’s emerging leadership during the escape, Lakita questions whether Essence may have chosen Grace too—perhaps without her realizing.

X6-MX: During a climactic confrontation, Ahmad states that “Essence remembers,” and now demands balance and reckoning—implying it actively guides justice in the world.

Full-metal Alchemy (FMA)

A powerful science developed by Sodo based on the law of equivalent exchange: to obtain something, something of equal value must be lost. Jehovah borrowed FMA to transmutate his clone, he called his son, into the Messiah, the one who would save his creation.

A04: Trapped in a cage by Sodo, he resists his captors with biting sarcasm and thinly veiled rage. Spits at the Watcher and refuses to use his original name, hinting at a renounced identity.

A09: Still imprisoned, he’s drawn into Panea and Henry’s cosmic drama. His future remains uncertain but vital.

Lakita

A time-traveling judge from 2052, deeply tied to Henry (2032) through complex emotional and cosmic threads. Analytical and emotionally burdened, she wrestles with past decisions—including Tom’s execution.

A02: Narrates her unease in New Berkeley. Shares a bed and life with Diwata and Lenny while haunted by thoughts of Gwen.

A09: Appears through a telepathic message to Henry. Hints at deeper connections and a painful past.

A10: Tries to reconcile with Henry while denying full responsibility for Tom’s death. Her motivations are murky, but she clearly cares.

Lauren Stephany Strauss-Mendoza

Qualities: Sharp, determined, and emotionally complex, Lauren is the student body president and daughter of Sandra Burris. She straddles the line between obedience and rebellion, loyalty and truth. As Henry’s partner and a leader within the New Cali Association, she carries the emotional weight of expectation, resistance, and love.

  • A11: Introduced with poise and polish. Lauren appears confident and composed as she prepares for a major presentation, embodying both leadership and pressure in a system she’s beginning to question.
  • A12: Narrates the chapter. Lauren guides Henry and Lindsey through the emotional and political turbulence of New Berkeley University. She is caught between allegiance to the Council and loyalty to the New Cali resistance.

  • A16: Tries to stop Henry’s detainment and later watches, helpless and enraged, as he’s dragged toward execution. Her scream after Henry is shot pierces the scene with devastating grief. Her emotions become a flashpoint for Sandra’s awakening.

Lindsey

A shapeshifting master controller who guards Henry in the form of a gull. Wise, witty, and emotionally connected to her charge, she bridges timelines and observes with fierce loyalty.

A08: Narrates Henry’s divine encounter while in gull form. Expresses deep care and awareness of cosmic forces.

Mâr-e Tiz: (Origins and Identity)

  • True Name: Sandra Burris once operated under the name Mâr-e Tiz, a renowned and deadly Master Controller known for her ability to strike with unimaginable speed and precision. The name is whispered with respect and fear among those who knew of the original wars.
  • Powers: She possesses supernatural reflexes and stealth, including the ability to catch bullets mid-air without being seen and turn enemy soldiers’ own bodies and shadows against them. Her control of prana and elemental forces rivals the highest-ranking warriors in the realm.
  • Connection to Bhutswami: Sandra’s transformation into Mâr-e Tiz was catalyzed by a prior life where she had deep entanglement with Bhutswami, the rogue scientist and demigod-like engineer. The mention of Bhutswami’s name in Chapter A16 triggers Sandra’s transformation—implying a shared history buried beneath layers of betrayal, silence, and trauma.
  • Past Appearance: Mâr-e Tiz previously fought in ancient wars as a commander allied with Victoria, another Master Controller. She was part of coordinated elemental assaults during a massive battle against Bhutswami’s biobots. Her communion with the mountain spirits and ability to channel natural forces through the earth marked her as a uniquely powerful combat strategist.
  • Reemergence: In A16, after Henry’s execution, Sandra walks away from the battlefield and says to Victoria, “You know me as Mâr-e Tiz,” signaling that the master warrior is returning to fight once again—this time not as Lauren’s mother or a university bureaucrat, but as the legendary force that once stood against tyranny

Master Controller

An elite spiritual or cosmic rank, denoting immense power, influence, and potential. Master Controllers are chosen, trained, and often hidden within society. Their abilities may involve manipulation of Essence, shape-shifting, spiritual protection, or combat efficiency. They were created through the manipulation of Sodo to create a balance with the powers given to Gods who were eternal and atemporal able to manipulate time and space; this is why Chauvin Coins or Chauvin Gold was created. If a carbonite was in proximity of a Chauvin Gold and if offered and accept the directives of Essence to be a protector of creation of Gods, they would receive the title Master Controller and be granted specific powers and abilities based upon what they had demonstrated.

Key Powers:

  • Telepathic communication across time (“chrono-emo link”)
  • Control over matter and energy (e.g., stopping bullets midair)
  • Manipulation of Essence, prana, and spiritual pathways
  • Defiance of divine hierarchies (e.g., challenging Jehovah)

A01 Victoria, a blind Master Controller, leads forces in Peru. Her battlefield intuition and elemental control reveal the strategic and spiritual height of her rank.

A14 Henry is officially recognized as a Master Controller. He declares that Master Controllers exist beyond the Ancients’ control and that Essence is not created but inherent.

A16.docx – Sandra Burris unleashes her hidden powers as a Master Controller. She uses unseen force to reverse bullets and collapse enemies. Her code name, Mâr-e Tiz, is linked to ancient elemental control

X6-MX: A physical token marks Lakita’s authority: her name embossed with the title “Master Controller,” reinforcing her divine or higher-order status in celestial hierarchies.

Melvin

Henry’s Guardian Angel, quiet and reserved but fiercely protective. Carries guilt about Panea and harbors secrets that put him at odds with the Celestial Order.

A07: Interrogated by Ikart. Tries to conceal the depth of Panea’s relationship with Henry, but cracks begin to show.

A08: Present when Panea gives Henry the message. Offers subtle guidance and emotional support.

A09: Reacts emotionally to the mention of Panea and the message. His attachment to Henry deepens.

A09: Sends two archangels to arrest Panea after her message to Henry, showing the ruthless enforcement of divine order.

A09: Is arrested by Archangels shortly after revealing vital truths to Henry.

A10: Her arrest leaves lingering questions about loyalty, prophecy, and the nature of celestial judgment.

Remard

A mysterious celestial who impersonates Michael. Commanding in presence but flawed in energy, his true allegiance is unclear.

A07: Approaches Henry at the beach, delivering a cryptic warning. Henry quickly sees through the disguise and challenges his authority.

Sandra Burris

Qualities: A coldly strategic and calculating Master Controller, Sandra exudes authority and precision. Often underestimated due to her maternal role as Lauren’s mother, she conceals immense power, a legacy of mastery, and a secret past tied to Bhutswami. Her calm exterior masks a lethal force and a fierce resolve.

  • A11: Briefly mentioned as someone with an imposing presence. The narrator reflects that “Sandra had a way of appearing exactly when I didn’t want her to,” suggesting a controlling and possibly intimidating relationship.
  • A13: Revealed to be Henry’s lover’s mother (Lauren’s mom), her connection to both Henry and Nadia puts pressure on already tense dynamics. Her past affiliations raise suspicions and test the trust of the younger generation.
  • A16: Narrates the chapter. Sandra anticipates the Council’s move and senses danger during exam day. She watches Henry and Lindsey get detained and remains composed while others panic. When Henry is dragged to be executed, Sandra unleashes her full power—killing the Black Brigade soldiers with terrifying efficiency. At the climax, after witnessing Henry’s death and miraculous return with Tom, she silently vows to act, revealing her true name—Mâr-e Tiz—and prepares for a larger war against Jehovah and Bhutswami.

Sodo (The Last Watcher)

A fallen angel corrupted by forbidden knowledge. Part scientist, part cultist, Sodo embodies domination masked as destiny.

A04: Captures Kaelen and Lyric, transporting them to the Entrance of Torment. His speech and actions are laced with sadism and warped purpose. Serves Bhutswami but maintains his own dark agenda.

Snyder (Henry)

A young shaman haunted by his brother’s death and celestial visions. He’s sarcastic, guarded, and intellectually sharp—possessing latent abilities that threaten the cosmic order.

A07: Smokes on a beach as he’s visited by an alleged Archangel Michael, who warns him of a coming messenger.

A08: Encounters Panea and the Tree of Knowledge. His skepticism and grief color the meeting, but a message begins to stir his power.

A09: Processes the encounter while being watched by Lindsey. Starts to accept his destiny and reconnect with higher forces.

A10: Engages in a time-bridging conversation with Lakita. Reflects on his brother Tom and begins stepping into his role as a powerful conduit of prana.

Snyder (Tom)

Henry’s older brother, a martyred empath and former revolutionary. He was neurodivergent, brilliant, and misunderstood—his death haunts every part of the story.

A08: Referenced by Henry and others as a visionary who could store prana and move crowds with his presence.

A09–A10: Henry reflects on Tom’s abilities, his commitment to nonviolence, and the betrayal that led to his death. Lakita hints at the Council’s regret but won’t admit the truth.

Victoria

A blind Master Controller deeply attuned to the spirits and elemental forces. Stoic and powerful, she acts as both warrior and prophet in the cosmic war.

A01: Leads the resistance against Bhutswami’s biobots in Peru. Communes with the earth and coordinates the animal commanders in battle. Her battle philosophy is rooted in ancient wisdom.

Zhulong

Aa mysterious prophetic title—meaning “Torch Dragon” in Chinese mythology—representing transformation and divine insight. Henry is marked as Zhulong, signaling a deep spiritual evolution beyond his human origin.

A08 After choosing to consume the decayed fruit, Henry is marked with the number 11 and the phrase “Zhulong is waiting.” Panea warns this is a title few survive.

A10 During a pranic exchange, Lakita tearfully acknowledges Henry as Zhulong, symbolizing her surrender to his growing power.

He possesses a heightened emotional sensitivity, which helps him in his investigative duties. He shows a flirtatious side, particularly with Alice, and longs for deeper connections. He has a divine or ethereal quality typical of angels, making him inherently beautiful.

He has large wings that are used frequently and sometimes ache. His halo can show his power level, as can all angels with halos. Archangels do not have halos.

Imps, Pixies, and Sprites: Pixies and sprites are both fairies, but sprites are closer to spirit or insect-like. While pixies are closer to earth elements or nature, they live underground or in stone ruins, which can be helpful to humans.

Jeffrey (C2): An ophanim appearing as a series of wheels rotating around an all-seeing eye, Jeffrey is one of several throne guards for Jehovah. He got his name from a Jinn whom he trained in martial arts.

Ophanim has four faces that are rotating wheels around a large eye. He has four large majestic wings that are invisible but allow him to be very mobile. Unlike the other Ophanim, Jeffrey is social and independent.  Jeffrey hides his faces and wings. His hands are like human hands that he keeps tucked in under his wings. His hands attach to his long, slender, fast, and strong arms. He has many eyes around the four wheels that surround his large eye, which does not blink and has two sides. He never sleeps.

Jeffrey leads worship when he is selected. He is shy and not smart but playful and deadly. If he thinks you are making fun of him or Jehovah, he will smash his victim by freezing him with a frozen stare and then hitting them with a lightning strike from one of his eyes.

Jeffrey enjoys mischievous activities despite his serious duties, often using his powers for playful antics. His unique appearance and unpredictable nature make him a fascinating, albeit sometimes troublesome, companion. He likes to meet with friends and play Gitzak in the park.

Powers: [1] shape-shifting, [2] Emo freeze, [3] Freeze destruction from eye stare, [4] Particle manipulation [5] astral, emo, and kinetic destruction

Jehovah (C2,3): Jehovah is a powerful deity known as the ‘Ancient of Days’ and is a figure of infinite patience and deep wisdom. He is characterized by a drive for creativity and a deep desire to be worshipped. Still, he also has an air of serenity and resilience, contrasting with his remarkable capacity for raw elemental power. He is depicted as omnipotent and grapples with his self-recognized flaw of jealousy. Having a son helps him evolve, and he begins to exhibit a growing understanding of love and forgiveness.

Jehovah’s Son (Clone): Joshua is a quiet, shy boy who is very wise and gentle. He has many women who cater to him, but he is not romantically involved. He makes and keeps friends easily. Men and women come up to ask for help, and he usually graciously refuses unless ‘His father’ tells him to take care of it. He is very close with his father and always consults him. He is wise and gentle. He showed anger when he went to the market once because someone spoke badly of his father, and he did not like the way they acted with his father’s things.

Powers: [1] Commands spirits through prayer, [2] Particle manipulation [3] Healer: uses astral, emo, and kinetic healing

Julia: Victoria’s assistant works alongside her through the same physical dangers. We learn how Julia is a powerful shaman in her own right as she heals the new wife of her partner. Victoria and Julia are lovers as well. Part of Victoria’s therapy is her time with Julia.

Kisit (C22): Ikart’s Editor

Kelel (C22): Ikart’s supervisor

Lakita (Cn): An Emo Master living in the time of TTD. Lakita is a determined and skilled agent with conflicted loyalties. She requires Henry’s unique power to fulfill her obligations to the Council, yet she is seen as cold and heartless due to her role in Tom’s demise. Beneath her tough exterior, she harbors fears and uncertainties about the Council’s cause.

As a teen, before TTD, Lakita learns from Victoria and Laka (Lakita’s mother). Lakita enters military service and later receives an appointment to be a colonel.  During TTD, appointed Governor and Judge of NW Council Region #5 in Peru. She sought to recruit strong allies. After Jehovah and Gabriel execute Laka, Victoria and Lakita align with Luci.

Lord Lakita is a conflicted, authoritative figure possessing immense destructive power who seeks to understand and perhaps trust Henry’s wisdom. She was rebellious as a teen with her friend Diwata. Lakita is not of the deity class but commands respect and power, intrigued by Henry’s potential and seeking alignment with his abilities. Lakita learns from Henry how to capture Jehovah but communicates with Henry first to determine if she can trust him (C1) and then to get advice on defusing Armageddon (around C40).

Lauren Strauss: Class president and Chinese Literature major at New Berkeley and an aspiring Public Emissary Assistant with the Council. Lauren has a deep academic commitment as she stands at the crossroads of personal loyalty, professional ambition, and societal change.

Lindsey (C2): Lindsey is a Gender and Sexuality major at New Berkeley. She is best friends with Lauren, and Henry’s best friend is a compassionate and skilled communicator. Linsey excels in social discourse and provides emotional support. She carries a personal burden of infertility, which causes tension with Lauren’s judgmental mother.

Lindsey is a shape-shifter. She commonly watches over her master, Henry, as a gull.

Lindsey was raised by her grandmother. Grandmother likes to say, “Zhulong is coming.’

Lord Crimson (C3): amalgamates various divine opinions and fears. He stands as a cautionary figure, symbolizing the concerns of the collective council over the possible dangers that uncontrolled creation and Prana could unleash.

Lucifer aka Luci (C2):  friends with Jeffrey, Elvis, Ikart. Mischievous, rebellious, not to be trusted.  Extremely beautiful with a hypnotic charm. Constantly working against his friends. Very secretive. He wants his friends to worship him. Many imps, pixies, and angels worship him and serve his evil purposes.

Manjit (C4): Manjit is Achet’s (P’aqo) father, whose presence looms large over P’aqo’s life. Originally from Punjab, Manjit’s sepia-toned memory is that of a traditional Sikh man torn between two lands whose tragic demise set Achet on his path. Manjit was a strict and somewhat traditional Sikh; he diligently followed the teachings of Guru Nanak. Although Manjit has passed away, his influence is deeply felt throughout P’aqo’s journey.

Maria (Cm):

P’aqo (formerly Achet) (C4): P’aqo, the protagonist, is an aged healer whose life has taken him from pre-Partition India to the highlands of Peru. The old man has a keen intellect and mastery of languages and medicine. Born Achet, his life was transformed by tragedy, leading him to leave his life as a healer in the Peruvian Sierra. He wears traditional Andean clothing and a patka (traditional Sikh attire), symbolizing the blend of his origin and current life. A respected and feared figure, he moves between the worlds of physical healing and ritualistic shamanism.

Panea (C2): Pronounce Penny. A fragile and diminutive Guardian Angel who embodies delicacy and strength. Panea inadvertently finds herself in the center of divine controversy. She was the Guardian for Gwen until she was abducted; we don’t hear more about Gwen again until Part 3 Chapter 20. She has piercing blue eyes, and her attire glows very bright.

Panea is Gwen’s guardian angel who is captured by Gabriel and destroyed because she discovers Jehovah’s intent to destroy the world and provides information to Victoria.

Pasa (C4): Pasa, the small black puppy, represents the innocence and unconditional love that P’aqo used to access the Wall.  The puppy’s ultimate sacrifice marks a chilling turning point in the chapter and an irony for the man who is supposed to be a healer.

Pixies, Imps, and Sprites: Pixies and sprites are both fairies, but sprites are closer to spirit or insect-like. While pixies are closer to earth elements or nature, they live underground or in stone ruins, which can be helpful to humans.
