My name is Jim Pestaner and I am a writer. I am a writer because I write. Years ago, I wrote technical documents; now, I write fantasy fiction. Like so many authors, I want to provide a great experience for my readers. I am always gaining new insights to help improve my writing. When I started, I thought writing was easy and fun. Of course, I knew that there was a constant improvement cycle, but after a few iterations, my writing would be golden, right? Of course, I was wrong. I want to explain to you my evolution in writing so far and help you be a better writer. My goal is to be a professional writer, capable of producing a novel each year.
As I became more serious about my craft,? I learned I needed help reviewing my drafts. Despite reading my words over and over, I was too familiar with the text and I needed a set of fresh eyes to find and fix simple mistakes I would overlook. And what I really needed was beyond punctuation and grammar fixes, for example, places where the reader gets confused within the story. But finding committed and reliable family members and friends to read my stories is not so easy. Then, I discovered online writer circles and that was a game-changer for me.
A writer?s circle is where authors share their work in private to discuss plot, characters, or dialogue and also fix mistakes that may be embarrassing if they were released without correction. As a tool, a writer circle is typically applied in the middle of the creative process. A writer creates a draft followed by a peer review of the draft. But it is readily apparent that a lot of the detail of the writing process is missing. From the beginning of the writing process, I need tools to organize my thoughts, write drafts, and find qualified editors and publishers to perform a review.?After I have a review of my drafts, I need to manage draft reviews and corrections and package and present finished products to consumers. These hidden requirements are in addition to the peer review process that writer circles focus on. Some writer circles had tools to manage a bit more. But I soon discovered that tools are just a small part of the solution to help improve writing.
It took time to have an ah-ha moment. When I had my moment, my eyes were opened. Yes, I needed some tools to help me write. But I needed to surrender my will and my expectations, ? and my tools, to the fact that writing was work for me. I could have every whiz-bang gizmo tool, a fancy website, beautiful pictures, and the world?s best marketing strategy, but I will never become a better writer without writing and improving and writing and improving, on Infinitum.? Writing gets better by writing. Period.
With that said, I want to explain some of the gems I uncovered in my journey to learn how to improve my writing. After working with several writer circles, I found the most valuable peer development environment for me was Critique Circle. But as good as my peers were who reviewed my stories (and many are exceptional), I found that my review quality and quantity was limited when I only used peers to comment on my work, so I hired beta readers, editors, and artists to help me from?Fiverr and other contractor sites. I needed the same tools I found on the online writer circle sites for the times I used outside contractors, outside to the writer circle sites. I created a set of tools to help in the creative process and use resources that would help me keep access to my tools inexpensive.
The result is JWC Tools, Jim?s Writer Circle Tools. My tools are built using the most widely distributed writing-focused web platform in the world, WordPress. And JWC Tools is a WordPress plugin. Adding plugins to a WordPress site is an easy process to learn. You can watch and learn how to add a plugin to a WordPress site on Youtube. WordPress is free; it is an Open Source online environment for anyone to use. With WordPress, you can create the same type of website I have. Open Source means it is free for you to download and distribute. But you need internet access, a website name, and a hosting company. There are many free opportunities to host a WordPress website but I am advising you to buy it.
If you don?t have a WordPress Website, you may get a managed site from me but you can also get your website from someone else, no problem. Just do a search on ?WordPress hosting?. Most hosting sites provide a way to buy your name and set up a hosting area.? Just make sure they host WordPress. Even if you use another hosting company that supports WordPress, you can use my plugin, JWC Tools. If you choose to have me set up your site in my hosting area, you will get a managed site at a lower price than anywhere you will find and your site is set up for free with my tools. You choose the site name and add your information and writing.? If you have one of my designed sites, you will get access to many online writing tutorials and writing resources. To try out the website or tools, please register on my site.
I am offering you these valuable resources to help you write better and to foster your interest in my product so that you can spread the word. Pun intended.
