The Angel Investigator
Narrator: Ikart
Location: Celestial Realm
When: D2 8a
Reporting for the Earth Times
I adjust the mic, roll my shoulders, and clear my throat. The artificial static hums in my ear, a subtle reminder that this is live—no take-backs.
“This is Ikart, reporting live for a Special Edition of the Earth Times. We’re following breaking developments in the ongoing crisis shaking the spirit realm. According to a high-ranking source within the High Court, the leadership council is in urgent deliberations over the unexplained disappearance of two angels assigned to the Earth region. Details remain scarce, but what we do know is that security measures are under review, and the High Court’s spokesperson is working closely with community leaders and the Earth Federation of Angels to prevent widespread panic. Questions remain: Were these disappearances targeted? Is there a larger threat at play? Officials are urging calm, but behind closed doors, there’s no doubt the search for answers is intensifying. We’ll continue to bring you updates as this story unfolds. Back to you, Raka.”
I switch off the mic and let out a slow breath. The red LIVE indicator fades, but the words still hang in the air, heavier than they should be.
Two angels. Gone. Just like that.
I lean back, stretching my shoulders, the weight of the report still pressing on me. Another investigation, another mess no one wants to talk about. The High Court scrambles to keep the illusion of control, but I know better. There’s always more to the story.
Before I can dwell on it, I feel my editor’s spirit brush against mine—subtle, but anxious. Angels aren’t supposed to get nervous. Or so the official line goes.
But reality? Spirits get nervous all the time. It’s why they hover, why they whisper warnings no one listens to. Humans make up myths when they don’t understand something. We just live them.
And right now, I’ve got a wing-ette practically vibrating with nerves.
Kisit. Fresh recruit. No real experience. Still thinks the system works. Just trying to earn his Guardian Angel wings.
He watches as I dig into my pocket and pull out a pack of American Spirits—ironic, I know.
His disapproving stare is almost comical.
“Yes, we’re done. But I need a favor… please.”
I groan. “Can we do this later? I have a stakeout.”
“Wait. I just need some background for Salina in the AmerAsia Local 400. She’s keeping the High Court informed on how the families are holding up, making sure they don’t start asking the wrong questions. She asked me to ask you. Said your intel could make all the difference. And… she’s also giving me a recommendation for the security academy.”
Ah. There it is. The thing he wasn’t saying.
I tilt my head, smirking. “Tell me, Kisit, are you blind to the fact that she’s playing you? Or are you just pretending because you like the attention?”
“I’m going to ignore that.” Kisit folds his arms, all righteous and brooding. “Angels aren’t supposed to have relationships. I just want to earn my wings.”
I flick my lighter, watching the flame dance. “A set of wings won’t make me any less of a pain in Kelel’s ass—or any better at my job.”
Kisit frowns. “I don’t know how Kelel puts up with you.”
I shrug. “He’s had centuries to try and shut me up. Hasn’t worked yet.”
He sighs. “Just read me your notes.”
I flip open my worn notebook.
Kisit doesn’t realize it yet, but he’s already in too deep.
And if he keeps chasing shadows, he’s going to drag me down with him.
The Vanishing Act
“According to Ziccona, her GA, Maria left her home in Jackson Heights at 6 a.m., wearing a light overcoat over a gold button-down blouse, black slacks, and a pair of comfortable walking shoes. She followed her routine—meditation, coffee, grabbing lunch for later—before catching the E Train to Van Wyck Station in Jamaica.”
I pause for a drag. “Jamaica—upscale, quiet. Not exactly the kind of place where angels go missing.”
Kisit is shaking his head. “Don’t say exact locations.”
“Relax,” I say, exhaling smoke. “I doubt this information is gonna start a riot. But sure, I’ll be careful.”
I skim further.
“Her mother, Cristina Withers, watched from the kitchen window as Maria left. Cristina—recent widow, mother of two. Her late husband, Aaron, was under angelic protection… until he wasn’t.”
“This is where it gets messy.” I glance at Kisit. “Aaron died because Hiwen failed his job.”
Kisit frowns. “Hiwen disappeared, Ikart. The Angel Council suspects Lucifer.”
I shake my head. “Lucifer gets blamed for everything. Convenient scapegoat. But I’m betting Hiwen got erased because he knew something—wrong place, wrong time. And whatever this is, it’s bigger than him.”
I flick ashes onto the pavement, watching Kisit fidget.
The Conspiracy No One Wants to Name
“Ikart, I need actual facts. Salina says she has it on good authority that Lucifer is sending a message to Jehovah. That no angel is untouchable.”
I bark out a laugh. “Come on, Kisit. That’s exactly the kind of conspiracy theory the Council loves pushing. The missing angels weren’t VIPs. No high-profile assignments. Just ordinary guardians with ordinary humans.”
I tap my notepad.
“On the other hand… Gabriel’s been pushing for more Guardian training. If he needs a reason to justify it, maybe he’s creating the problem to fix.”
Kisit’s brows knit together. “Are you saying the Council would sacrifice its own angels?”
I smirk. “I’m saying it’s convenient that the Council always has a solution to every new problem. Too convenient.”
The Missing Links
I flip a few more pages. “Cristina, Maria’s mother, goes by code name Nana. She’s raising her granddaughter, Lakita. That kid is important.”
“To who?”
“To a lot of people.” I take another puff. “Her spirit guide is Laka. Telel assigned Emortis to oversee them both.”
Kisit exhales, rubbing his temples. “And?”
“And Cristina prays daily. Every morning. For her family, her dead husband, and—get this—the spiritual development of Lakita’s future team.”
I close the notebook, letting that sink in.
Kisit frowns. “A team? What kind of team?”
“That’s what I’m still figuring out.”
Loose Ends and Final Warnings
Kisit shifts, uneasy. “So… what do I tell Salina?”
I smirk. “Tell her nothing.”
“Ikart—”
“Listen, kid.” I exhale smoke, watching it curl into the night air. “Loose lips sink ships. And I don’t trust Salina to keep a secret.”
Kisit hesitates. I can see it in his eyes—he wants to believe everyone plays by the rules. He’s still new. He doesn’t understand that rules don’t protect us. They trap us.
Finally, he sighs. “Fine. I’ll keep it vague.”
“That’s the spirit.”
He rolls his eyes and turns to leave.
“Did I hear a ‘thank you?’” I call after him.
He snorts. “Thank you, Ikart.”
His wings snap open, and in a single, fluid motion, he disappears.
I flick my cigarette butt onto the curb, watching the ember fade. Then I pat my pockets.
Shit.
I lost my lighter. Again.
I shake my head, stretching my wings before heading for my next stakeout.
The truth won’t find itself.

Summary [S2]
Ikart, an investigative journalist, reports on the disappearance of two angels, revealing the High Court’s growing concern. After signing off, he is approached by Kisit, a rule-abiding angel seeking intel for Salina of AmerAsia Local 400. Skeptical of Salina’s motives, Ikart teases Kisit but shares details about Maria, a vanished angel, and her family, particularly her granddaughter Lakita, who holds celestial significance. Suspecting a deeper conspiracy beyond the Council’s claim that Lucifer is responsible, Ikart theorizes Gabriel may be fabricating a crisis to justify increased Guardian training. Refusing to fully trust Salina, he withholds key findings, leaving Kisit frustrated. As he heads to his next stakeout, Ikart remains determined to uncover the truth.
