Polyamory

Polyamory is the practice of having multiple intimate consensual relationships. These relationships may be sexual or just romantic and involve the responsibilities of children, property, and cohabitation. The important aspect of these relationships is that they operate with the full knowledge and consent of all parties. Polygamy or marriage to multiple people is a different relationship structure and is not legal.  Polyamorous relationships require transparency and honesty. There are many attributes and boundaries that may be employed in poly structures.

Polyamory in the USA is more prevalent than most people realize. One study found that approximately 11% of a 3000-person sample had been in a poly relationship. While polyamory is not illegal, it can have its own complexities. Polyamorous people may run into a legal quagmire when they try different kinds of arrangements.

There are 6 major misconceptions about polyamory:

  • Polyamory is just an excuse to cheat.
  • Polyamorous people don’t get jealous.
  • Polyamorous people are all bisexual.
  • Polyamorous people are just looking for sex.
  • Polyamorous people don’t have rules or boundaries
  • Polyamorous people are incapable of commitment.
